Connecting The Dots

Tales from our community kitchen

From Depression-Era Wisdom to Modern Sustainability

In Kaye's sunny kitchen, rows of mason jars line the shelves, each meticulously labeled and filled with pantry staples. This organization isn’t just a recent Pinterest trend; it’s a lifetime of wisdom passed down through generations.

"Waste not, want not," Kaye fondly recalls her mother's words from childhood in the 1940s. "Back then, it wasn’t about being eco-friendly; it was about survival and maximizing what you had." Growing up in post-war America, Kaye watched her mother preserve vegetables from their victory garden, store dry goods, and repurpose every jar that came through their kitchen.

Now at 82, Kaye’s mason jar collection tells a new story. While the fundamental principle remains the same, her motivation has evolved. "When my grandchildren began discussing plastic pollution in the oceans, it struck a chord. I realized that the lessons from my upbringing could help tackle today’s environmental challenges."

Her system is simple. Clear mason jars of various sizes hold everything from flour and sugar to homemade granola and dried beans. Each jar features a label with its contents and the date—an essential practice Kaye swears by. "People often ask for my secret to an organized pantry," she laughs. "It’s really just about labeling. You’d be surprised how many types of rice look identical in a jar!"

Kaye's mason jar lifestyle has influenced her family in meaningful ways. Her daughter now runs workshops teaching young parents about sustainable food storage, while her grandchildren proudly carry mason jar lunches to school. "It’s come full circle," Kaye reflects. "What began as a necessity during tough times has transformed into our family’s contribution to a better future."

This simple yet effective approach to reducing single-use plastics demonstrates that sometimes, the best solutions to modern problems can be found in the wisdom of previous generations.
